About Maria
Maria Laffey is a visual artist living and working on the west coast of Ireland in Connemara, Co. Galway. Her studio overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, its rugged coastline and neighbouring islands, which provide a constant source of inspiration for her nature-focused work. She obtained a B.A. in Fine Art and Design from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology in 2011.
She works in oils and acrylics, and her current work lies between abstraction and expressionism. Her latest work focuses on floral and botanical forms, always reflections of nature. She feels an emotional connection to colour and uses it boldly, seeking to capture the beauty and wonder of nature through the use of fluid energetic brush strokes and a vibrant colour palate.
My Artistic Journey
“From an early age, art has been a big interest to me. I remember opening a large pack of markers I received for a Christmas present and the feeling of excitement at the array of colours before me and the endless possibilities!
Although I took the subject of art in school back then it wasn’t considered a serious career and certainly not one you would make a living on, so business studies in college was the sensible choice and reluctantly art took a backseat.
When time allowed I took art courses on the weekends and evenings, but it was never enough so I went back to college as a mature student and graduated with a BA in Fine Art & Design in 2010.
Now that my children are older, I have taken the leap to dedicate my time to painting instead of running a business. And hey, Life is wonderful!
